This garden was done twice - before and after the Oakland Hills fire. The owners (one of whom is a most talented architect) designed and had built this home, which is one of the most exquisite and tasteful homes in the area. This craftsman gem has a Japanese sensibility to it, and the garden reflects that in its organization and plantings. A challenging steep down slope is accommodated by dry-stack moss rock retaining walls allowing for a gentle transition down to their front entry from the street level. Some of this garden is in full sun, but a piece of it is hidden by the house, creating a shady area by the water feature. By selecting a few plants that can take both sun and shade, these bridging choices make for a rhythmic transition from one environment to the other.
