Brown Shingle

before photos

This inviting and charming early 20th century brown shingle needed a new entry (to tie into the existing brick staircase going to the front door, and likewise most of the concrete retaining wall) and backyard, including an inviting deck connecting the kitchen area to the backyard garden. Replacing a failing, perfunctory deck, perched too high off the ground, Tim and Lisa created a cascading outside space for their clients, a new room for them to enjoy the outdoors. By skirting the bottom of the deck with brown shingles, the house and deck became harmonious, further aided by the expansive effect of cascading spaces descending from the tall facade of the rear. Built-in planters and seating conceal a secondary staircase while softening the hardscape with plants and an invitation to sit and relax, drawing the garden closer to the house and the architecture into the garden.
