On a much coveted street in Berkeley, this wonderful, craftsman home was in need of a new garden redo. For a two story home, there was little traditional garden space with which create garden living. While the area above the garage affords space for vegetables and flowers, there's just enough room for the sloped entry to present as succulent and cacti-filled frontage without new retaining walls or added hardscape. Having only a narrow strip as a backyard, the sideyard deck is, in terms of outside living, it. All the more reason for the deck area to be alluring, and special. It now looks like it was built with the house, not an appendage.

Different rooms were created with built-in stucco planters, flagstone flooring where the grade was level to the kitchen doors, and a wooden floor where the grade drops away. A mirror behind a stand of bamboo located between windows opening onto vistas worthy of keeping, adds dimension and depth. A small water feature lends a soft touch to a very usable, cozy, yet expansive outside space, one that extends the indoor living outside.
